Landmine blast kills child in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A child lost his life on Monday in an explosion caused by a landmine planted by unknown individuals inside an abandoned military checkpoint that belonged to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The checkpoint is located at a town in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

For months, militants affiliated with the Syrian government and Iran have been targeting SDF outposts in areas held by the SDF in east of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

The SDF-affiliated Hajin Military Council in the city of Hajin, eastern Deir ez-Zor, said in a statement on its Facebook account that militants linked to a “terrorist group planted a landmine near a military checkpoint, which our forces had evacuated months ago for security reasons, near the crossroads of the town of Muzan in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.”

The statement added that the landmine exploded when 15-year-old Bashar Khaled Eid entered the abandoned checkpoint, resulting in his immediate death.

The statement further noted that armed groups continue to endanger the lives of civilians to undermine security and stability in SDF-held areas.

All residents were urged to report any suspicious activities or the presence of armed individuals in the area to the relevant security forces to ensure their security and safety.
