Turkey transfers Syrians from Syria’s Sere Kaniye to Turkish territory

SERE KANIYE, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, Turkish intelligence transported six Syrians who had been arrested by a faction of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) two days earlier in the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), northeastern Syria, to a prison within Turkish territory.

Reports from international human rights organizations have highlighted the illegal arrest and transfer of Syrians to Turkish territory. Human Rights Watch stated in a report released in 2021 that Turkey, along with its SNA factions, had transferred 63 detainees to its territory in violation to its “obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention as an occupying power in northeast Syria.”

An official from the SNA’s Military Police informed North Press that Turkish intelligence received six detainees, including three females, from the Military Police, in the city of Sere Kaniye. The detainees, who were arrested on charges related to ‘security issues’, were then transported via the Ras al-Ain border crossing to Turkish territory.

On Nov. 23, Turkish intelligence transferred eight Syrian detainees to Turkey through the same crossing on charges of “collaborating with hostile entities.”

The source added that the six detainees were transferred to the Halwan Prison in the southeastern Turkish province of Urfa, without providing any information regarding their names or fate.

The detainees had initially arrived in Sere Kaniye with the intention of illegally crossing into Turkey and subsequently seeking refuge in a European country.
