QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – US President Joe Biden sent on Thursday a letter to the Congress informing it about the recent measures against Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq and assuring that they are consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148).
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has perpetrated a series of attacks against US personnel and facilities in Syria and Iraq. As a response, the US forces conducted strikes against facilities in Syria used by the IRGC and its-affiliated groups, according to the White House.
The US conducted early on Wednesday precision airstrikes on two facilities of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq in response to attacks on a US base there, which the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iranian-backed militias, claimed responsibility for.
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on Oct. 7, following a surprise attack by Hamas, the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq has stepped up its attacks against US bases in Syria and Iraq.
“The strikes were taken to deter future attacks and were conducted in a manner designed to limit the risk of escalation and avoid civilian casualties,” the letter read.
The US President stressed that the main purpose of his directions is to “protect and defend our personnel who are in Iraq and Syria conducting military operations pursuant to the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force.”
The strikes intended to disrupt the ongoing attacks against the US and its partners in the region, and to deter Iran and its-backed militias from conducting or supporting further attacks, according to the letter.
