Tension peaks as protesters’ bus attacked in Syria’s Suwayda

SUWAYDA, Syria (North press) – On Tuesday, a bus carrying protesters was targeted with live ammunition and subsequently stoned while passing through the village of al-Afina in the southern countryside of Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria.

This incident is the first of its kind where protesters in Suwayda have been directly targeted since the start of anti-government protests in late August.

An eyewitness told North Press that after protesters finished a demonstration in al-Qrayya town, they boarded a bus to return. While the bus was in its way back, it came under gunfire and the windows were shattered by thrown stones.

He added that the targeting resulted in minor injuries caused by shattered glass as a result of the stones thrown by young men from the village of al-Afina, believed to be affiliated with the Syrian government forces.

The eyewitness further explained that many areas in Suwayda are witnessing a state of anger and tension among protesters amid heightened alertness from the Syrian government forces in the area.
