Government-linked armed groups assault protesters in Suwayda city

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Armed groups affiliated with the Syrian government attacked protesters on Sunday evening in front of the Baath Party branch in the city of Suwayda, southern Syria.

This morning, residents of Suwayda closed government offices following calls for a strike in the protests in support of the residents’ demands regarding improving their living conditions.

North Press correspondent in Suwayda reported, “Armed groups belonging to the Military Intelligence Branch of the Syrian government attacked the protesters in front of the Baath Party Branch in central Suwayda and threatened to kill them if the strike, which led to the closure of all government institutions in the city, continued.”

He added that after the attack by these armed groups, the protesters decided to “suspend the strike tomorrow, Monday, to avoid bloodshed and out of fear for the lives of the protesters.”

He explained that tensions escalated on Sunday between the government and the demonstrators in Suwayda due to the escalation and the imposition of a strike on government institutions by the protesters.

He also noted that the protesters have called for large-scale demonstrations tomorrow, Monday, to denounce today’s attack and reaffirm their demands.
