Russia condemns increased Israeli airstrikes on Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Russia condemned on Tuesday the Israeli airstrikes on Syria, saying they risked triggering a spillover of the Israel-Hamas war into a wider regional conflict.
This came in a phone call between the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad. Lavrov stressed his country’s opposition to Israel’s strikes on Syria, and warned against any actions that could provoke an escalation in the “current explosive situation”.
Israel frequently targets suspected positions of Iranian-backed militias in Syria in what appears to be an effort to curb their movement.
Lavrov said “the spread of the armed escalation to Syria and other countries of the region is impermissible.”
Israeli army previously said it carried out a string of airstrikes on military targets inside Syria in response to multiple incidents of rockets and shells fired at Golan Heights in recent weeks.
United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said a day before the war between Israel and Hamas is spilling over into Syria worsening the already unstable situation.
Israeli airstrike targeted late on Oct. 29 two military camps of the Syrian government forces in the western countryside of Daraa, south Syria.
