CENTCOM says US military destroyed drones in southwest Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday morning, the US military destroyed two one-way attack drones near US and US-led Global Coalition forces in southwest Syria before reaching their intended targets, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
The CENTCOM said on X that no casualties or damage were recorded.
“We are vigilantly monitoring the situation in the region and will take necessary and proportionate action to defend U.S. and Coalition forces,” according to the CENTCOM.
The US forces in the al-Tanf garrison, in southern Syria near the border with Iraq and Jordon, shot down two drones before reaching the base, according to a source from the US personnel at the base.
Hours following the incident, the Islamic Front for the Iraqi Resistance, affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), claimed responsibility for targeting US forces in al-Rukban and al-Tanf garrisons, in southern Syria near the border with Iraq and Jordon, using two drones.
Over the past week, the US military bases in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen were targeted by drones and rockets. All of the attacks are believed to have been carried out by Iran-backed militias in the region: the Houthis in Yemen, and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which is affiliated with the IRGC.
The spike in attacks against US forces and personnel coincides with Israel’s escalation in the Gaza Strip, which comes in retaliation to a Hamas attack on Oct. 5 in southern Israel.
