US forces in Iraqi base attacked by rockets

ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – On Sunday, the Ain al-Asad airbase in the Anbar Governorate, in western Iraq, has been targeted by rockets by militants, marking the fourth attack in less than a week on US forces in Iraq.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7, following a surprise attack by Hamas, many militias in Iraq, Syria, and even Lebanon have stepped up their threats of targeting US forces.

According to two US military sources speaking to Reuters, “Katyusha rockets on Sunday targeted the Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, and one blast was heard inside the base.”

On Saturday, the US defense systems at the Ain al-Asad airbase shot down two drones while they were flying near the base.

This is the fourth such attack on US forces in Iraq in the past four days.

In recent days, al-Harir airbase in the city of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has also come under similar attacks, along with the Victory base near the capital, Baghdad.

The US announced on Saturday deploying new defense systems, including Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and Patriot battalions, to the Middle East in response to recent attacks on US troops in the region.

So far, there has been no official comment from the Iraqi government regarding the attacks targeting US bases.
