Suwayda residents reject visit of government official to city

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, residents of the city of Suwayda, southwestern Syria, blocked the Damascus-Suwayda road after reports circulated that a Syrian government official is set to visit the city.

For the last two months, Suwayda has been witnessing anti-government protests, demanding the improvement of living conditions and the release of detainees.

One of the protesters told North Press that residents of the city of Suwayda and the town of Salim, in its northern countryside, blocked the Damascus-Suwayda road by burning tires in protest against an expected visit by Wael Mualla, head of the General Sports Federation, to the city to express solidarity with Gaza.

He added, “The purpose of Mualla’s visit is to stand in solidarity with al-Assad but under the umbrella of standing with Gaza, due to the ongoing protests in the city against the Syrian government.”
