AANES official urges UN to investigate Turkish attacks in NE Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – An official of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) urged the United Nation on Sunday to send special teams to investigate the recent Turkish bombardment on areas of northern and northeastern Syria.
Badran Chiya Kurd, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the AANES, said on social media platform X, “We urgently appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, and the UN Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir Peterson, to consider sending specialized teams to investigate the facts of the recent brutal attacks launched by the Turkish regime on northern and eastern Syria.”
From Oct. 5 to Oct. 9, Turkey launched many airstrikes, artillery shells, and drone strikes on 224 locations in northern and northeastern Syria, targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure such as gas, water, electricity, and oil facilities, according to the Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press.
Chiya Kurd condemned the bombardment, saying that these “attacks led to the destruction of parts of a vast amount of civilian infrastructure and vital facilities, which has left disastrous consequences for millions of defenseless civilians, including hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people including those in camps and makeshift shelters.”
The official said that the Turkish attacks created challenging conditions for establishing security and maintaining stability “in light of the extensive limitations that exist in international humanitarian work in the region.”
“It is necessary for the UN to reconsider the programs and campaigns it is following in its support of the region, and to urgently search for ways to open crossings in support of current humanitarian situations and prevent their politicization,” Chiya Kurd concluded.
On Oct. 12, the AANES Foreign Relations Department called on human rights, international, and humanitarian organizations, as well as fact-finding committees, to work towards conducting a transparent and impartial investigation regarding violations committed by Turkey in northeast Syria.
