Turkish drone strike disables two power stations in Syria’s Hasakah
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Two electricity substations in the city of Hasakah, northeast Syria, are out of service due to Turkish drone strikes that targeted them on Thursday.
Azad Suleiman, an official at the Energy Office of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Hasakah, told North Press that “Due to Turkish drone strikes on the Western Dam Station, a fire broke out in a transformer called the ‘Auxiliary Transformer’ at the station, causing both the Western and Eastern Dam stations to go completely out of service.”
The drone strikes took place following a statement by Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, in which he threatened to strike a broader range of targets in Syria and Iraq in retaliation for the Ankara attack.
On Oct. 1, two individuals carried out a bomb attack in front of the building of the Ministry of Interior in Ankara injuring two police officers.
On Wednesday, Fidan claimed that the two assailants who carried out the attack had been trained in Syria. “From now on, all infrastructure, large facilities and energy facilities belonging to (armed Kurdish groups) in Iraq and Syria are legitimate targets for our security forces,” he threatened.
“We are trying on an emergency basis to restore electricity to the Eastern Dam station, but the Western Dam station that supplies several neighborhoods and villages in Hasakah will remain out of service until the burnt transformer is replaced,” Suleiman added.
