Turkey releases Kazakh ISIS suspect wanted by Interpol

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Turkish authorities released a Kazakh ISIS suspect wanted by Interpol for lack of evidence against him, a Turkish news website reported on Wednesday.

Artı Gerçek news website said the Kazakh national identified as D.K. was released in September after staying in Sincan Prison in Ankar for 29 month. Turkish authorities said Kazakhstan failed to provide the needed documents, therefore he was released due to insufficient evidence.

According to the indictment prepared by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, 35-year-old “DK went from Kazakhstan to Egypt in 2013, when the civil war in Syria intensified. His next stop after Egypt was Türkiye. DK, who contacted the ISIS structure in Turkey, stayed in houses in various provinces. When he went to Antep, he stayed at the house of a person named Maksat; With his help, he crossed into Syria illegally.”

D.K. was publicly involved in recruiting members in ISIS, calling for “Jihad” and targeting primarily Kazakh nationals. He caught the attention of Kazakhstan’s intelligence service who informed the Interpol and hence a red notice was issued for him in 2014.

The indictment also added “he frequently crossed into Turkey illegally during his time in Syria. When he entered Turkey, he moved easily thanks to the fake ID prepared by ISIS,” and resided in houses designated by ISIS network in the country.

The Kazakh ISIS suspect was arrested in April 2021 in Ankara on the charge of “membership in a terrorist organization” and sent to Sincan Prison.

He has been subjected to a travel ban and judicial supervision, currently awaits trial in Ankara. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 2024.
