Volleyball tournament commemorating Mahsa Amini begins in NE Syria

AMOUDA, Syria (North Press) – A women’s volleyball tournament commenced on Wednesday at the sports hall in the town of Amuda, in northeastern Syria, in commemoration of Mahsa Amini, also known as Jina Amini.

Amini was a Kurdish girl who lost her life by Iran’s Morality Police on September 16, 2022. The incident sparked widespread protests in Iran, which were met with violent suppression by the authorities.

North Press correspondent said that the tournament started with the participation of eight teams, comprising 70 players.

The source added that the organizers said that preparations for the tournament began about two months ago, noting that the tournament will continue for two days.

Khalil Ahmad, a member of the organizing committee of the championship and coach of Sardam Club, told North Press that the goal of organizing this tournament is to develop women’s volleyball in Amouda, similar to their successful counterparts in football.

Ahmad added that according to the championship system, the eight teams are divided into two groups, competing against each other. Four of them will pass to the semi-finals and then the final, which will be held tomorrow, Thursday. In addition, collective and individual awards will be distributed.

Ahmad urged the relevant sports authorities to continue organizing volleyball tournaments to develop this sport in the region.
