Assad, Xi announce strategic partnership between China, Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria and China announced on Friday the formation of a strategic partnership ahead of the Asian Games held in the city of Hangzou, southern China.

Chinese President, XI, said in a video posted by state broadcaster CCTV, “In the face of the unstable and uncertain international situation, China is willing to work with Syria to firmly support each other … and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice.”

Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, in his first official visit to China since 2004, aims to strengthen his relations with china and discuss economic assistance from china to help the reconstruction of Syria in the future.

China has supported the Syrian government since the start of the Syrian crisis by using its veto on the UN Security Council eight times to obstruct resolutions against al-Assad.

CCTV said Xi told al-Assad that China supports Syria in opposing external interference and promoting a political solution led by the Syrian people.

In return al-Assad expressed his hopes that the meeting would lead to “wide-ranging and long-term strategic cooperation in all fields” between China and Syria.
