Government forces reposition in Syria’s Daraa after removing posts

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian government forces set up on Thursday a new military post and stationed soldiers in several uninhabited houses of civilians in the city of Daraa, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press that the government forces stationed in a new military post in the Sahari neighborhood in Daraa days after withdrawing its forces from posts in Daraa al-Balad neighborhood.

The source added that the government forces turned several uninhabited houses into posts then established the new military post.

The purpose behind establishing the post is still unknown but it will make live difficult for hundreds of young men wanted for the military service in Daraa al-Balad, the source noted.

A week ago, the government forces withdrew from five military posts in Daraa al-Balad where they stationed as part of the 2021 settlement agreement. The forces were supposed to withdraw six month after the agreement, however they did not abide by it.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and the government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those who opposed the agreement they were sent to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).
