SDF extends condolences to Kurdistan Region’s CTG after drone attack
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) offered condolences to the Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), following a drone attack against an airport in the city of Sulaymaniyah, south of the KRI.
On Sep. 18, the CTG announced the death of three of its members and the injury of three others in an attack carried out by a drone coming from Turkey.
Yehia Rasool, military spokesperson for the Iraqi prime minister, said that “a drone entered Iraqi airspace through the border with Turkey and bombed Arbat airport in Sulaimani province.”
The SDF General Command expressed its condolences in a statement saying, “With deep sorrow and sadness, we received the news of the martyrdom of a group of heroes from the CTG during a treacherous attack targeting Arabat Airport…. These heroes, with their pure blood, forged an honorable path in the struggle and sacrifice for their people and nation.”
The SDF continued, “Our people shall forever hold their courageous heroes and the robust military and security institutions that safeguard them in the highest esteem.”
The SDF and the CTG have conducted joint operations in northeastern Syria as part of the US-led Coalition’s efforts to combat the Islamic State (ISIS).
Bafel Talabani, Head of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), considered the attack a blatant violation to KRI borders, calling it “a part of the conspiracy aimed at disturbing the peace and stability of the Kurdistan Region.”
UN, US, and security leaders in Iraq condemned the attack, and called for respecting the sovereignty of Iraq.
