China expected to play main role in Syria’s reconstruction

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – As Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visits China, the latter is expected to play a major role in the future in Syria’s reconstruction, according to the Associated Press (AP).

China is expected to help Syrian government in the process of reconstructing Syria. The reconstruction process may cost tens of billions of dollars, according to the AP.

A senior Syrian government source revealed to North Press on Sept.18 details of al-Assad’s trip to China.

Al-Assad’s primary objective during his visit to China is to strengthen ties between Syria and China, and to explore opportunities for strategic partnerships that can enhance trade and investment between the two countries, according to the source.

In 2022, Syria joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative in which Beijing expands its influence in developing regions through infrastructure projects.

China has been expanding its reach in the Middle East after mediating a deal in March between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and it continues to support al-Assad in the Syrian conflict, which has killed half a million people and left large parts of the nation in ruins.

China has used its veto power at the UN eight times to stop resolutions against the Syrian government, the latest in July 2020.
