Over 110 Syrians killed in Libya massive floods
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Over 110 Syrian civilians were killed and over 100 other Syrians have gone missing due to Daniel storm which was followed by massive floods in Derna city in western Libya, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a war monitoring group based in Britain.
The SOHR reported that efforts are underway to retrieve victims stranded under rubble and those who have been swept away by the catastrophic floods.
The SOHR called on all international authorities to prioritize addressing this disaster and provide help and support to Syrian victims and their families who are away from their homeland.
The UN stated that at least 3,958 people have died across Libya due to flooding, citing the UN World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, more than 9,000 people are still missing.
Libya, a country of six million people, is politically divided between east and west and public services have crumbled since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising that prompted years of conflict. The internationally recognized government in Tripoli does not control eastern areas.
