Mutual shelling causes casualties in NW Syria

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) –  Intensive mutual shelling resumed on Sunday in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria between the Syrian government forces and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front), resulting in casualties from both parties.

A military commander in the Fateh al-Mubin Operation Room told North Press that the government forces targeted with dozens of artillery shells and rockets the villages of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, and the outskirts of the village of al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain in the south of Idlib, northwest Syria.

The shelling also occurred in the villages of Kafr Taal, Kafr Amma, Tadil, al-Wasata, al-Qasr in the western countryside of Aleppo, al-Sirmaniyah, al-Enkawi and Duwayr al-Akrad in the Ghab Plain in the west of Hama, leading to the injury of two HTS militants in the west of Aleppo, the source added.

Meanwhile, the HTS targeted the posts of the government forces in al-Malaja, Hazarin, Kafr Nabl in the south of Idlib and the Regiment 46 and Basratun in the west of Aleppo, killing three soldiers in Regiment 46, according to the source.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.

In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.
