Druze leader in Suwayda receives phone call from US representative

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Raafat Abu Ras, a spiritual advisor for the leadership of the Druze al-Muwahhidun ethnicity, told North Press that US Congressman French Hill contacted the leadership in Suwayda Governorate, represented by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajiri.

Reports circulated on social media in Suwayda indicating US contacts with the spiritual leadership in the governorate.

Syrian opposition figure Maher Sharaf-addin wrote on his social media accounts that Republican Representative French Hill had a conversation with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajiri for more than half an hour.

Spiritual Advisor Raafat Abu Ras stated to North Press, “Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajiri receives dozens of calls daily from internal and foreign parties.”

He said that the sheikh “received more than 18 calls from individuals in the US, including politicians, civilians, and military personnel, and Mr. Hill was among them.”

Abu Ras said that “Sheikh Hikmat is distant from politics and does not engage in political issues. He also thanked the callers for their positions and solidarity with the protests in Suwayda.”

The spiritual advisor in Suwayda did not disclose the content of the conversation with the US representative.
