Counter-Terrorism Units arrest ISIS militant in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Counter-Terrorism Units (YAT) of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested on Sep. 15, an Islamic State (ISIS) militant  in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, the SDF Media Center announced on Saturday.

The SDF Media Center said in a statement that the YAT and the Sulaymaniyah-based Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) supported by air surveillance of the US-led Global Coalition, conducted a security operation in the village of al-Buneital, east of Deir ez-Zor.

The operation led to the arrest of an ISIS militant “responsible for supplying ISIS terrorist cells with weapons and funding terrorist acts in the region,” the statement added.

“Various weapons and military equipment were confiscated during the operation, including, AK-47 rifle /2/, Pistol /2/, Pistol magazines /5/, AK-47 magazines /1/, Smartphones /3/, Military binoculars /1/,” according to the media center.

ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The SDF, with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghuz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.

After Baghuz, thousands of ISIS militants were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)-held areas.

“Our dedicated forces, in close partnership with the International Coalition, will persistently pursue ISIS terrorists across different regions of NE Syria,” the statement concluded.
