Turkish forces send military reinforcements to NW Syria

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Turkish forces sent on Saturday a military convoy consisting of logistical equipment and military vehicles to the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria, coinciding with renewed military escalation between the conflict parties in the region.

Military sources informed North Press that a Turkish military convoy, including more than 17 military vehicles, logistic trucks, and armored vehicles, entered Syrian territory through Kafr Lusin border crossing. The convoy headed towards al-Bara and Kansafra axes in the southern countryside of Idlib Governorate, northwest Syria.

The sources indicated that the convoy included ten armored vehicles along with trucks carrying heavy excavation machinery, cement barriers, and prefabricated cement rooms. These reinforcements aim to enhance their presence in the de-escalation zones south of Idlib following the recent significant escalation in the area.

Since the beginning of 2023, Turkish forces have continued to send additional military reinforcements to Idlib, coinciding with the military escalation between Syrian government forces and Russia on one side and Syrian opposition factions, including extremist groups, in Idlib and the countryside of Latakia on the other.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.

In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.
