IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – One Syrian asylum seeker was killed and another was injured on Thursday by Turkish border guards gunfire while attempting to cross the Syrian-Turkish border in northwest Idlib, northwest Syria.
Local sources in the area informed North Press that “the border guards opened fire on a group of Syrian young people as they tried to cross the border from al-Assi River near the town of Darkush, northwest of Idlib.”
They added that a resident of the village of al-Maghara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, was killed due to a gunshot wound and falling into the al-Assi River. Another person sustained injuries after being struck by the border guards with stones on his head upon falling into the river.
Most of those who try to enter Turkish territory resort to dangerous smuggling routes to reunite their families or get a job opportunity to meet their needs, especially in light of poor living and economic conditions people suffer from in northwestern Syria.
