Syria’s FM accuses West of obstructing Arab reconciliation efforts

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Syria, Faisal Mekdad, strongly criticized on Wednesday Western nations, accusing them of engaging in blatant interference and exerting unacceptable pressure to obstruct any Arab reconciliation efforts.

Mekdad’s criticism of Western countries came during a speech he delivered at the 160th session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level in Cairo on Wednesday.

He said, “The main challenges facing Syria do not only affect Syria itself but extend to threaten the entire Arab national security.”

Mekdad further added that “terrorism, with its crimes against Syria and many other Arab countries, as well as the Turkish and American occupation of parts of Syrian territories and their factions, threaten Arab interests in general and requires concerted efforts to put an end to it.”

He said that the West presents the concept of a world based on rules, and its goal through this concept is to impose its rules on other peoples of the world, including the peoples of the region, as they are the ones who established these rules, according to his speech.

He also noted that the previous Jeddah Summit, held months ago, had important decisions and played a role in Arab-Arab and Arab-regional breakthroughs that preceded it.

He clarified that Syria’s continuation of its natural pivotal role in its Arab surroundings constitutes an important turning point and marks the launch of a new phase of joint Arab action and regional convergence for solidarity among us and in the service of the entire region.

Mekdad expressed Syria’s hope that the discussions and decisions of the current session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level would rise to the level of challenges and dangers threatening the Arab countries, establish genuine solidarity, prevent external interventions in their affairs, and focus on achieving liberation, “combating terrorism, development, and prosperity instead of war and destruction.”

Mekdad also pointed out that the final statement issued by the Cairo meeting provides the optimal framework for action and cooperation with Arab countries in the current stage, away from American and Western attempts to disrupt and hinder this path.
