Armed people target oil field in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Armed individuals targeted on Thursday an oil well near Koniko oil field in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, amidst ongoing security tension in the area.

Eyewitnesses said that smoke columns raised from an oil well opposite the town of Jadida Akidat in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor as a result of the targeting.

A local source reported that Iranian factions had brought in weapons and ammunition to the town of Jadida Akidat with the aim of escalating against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and it is expected that the targeting of the oil well is in line with the agenda of those factions.

On Wednesday, the SDF announced the dismissal of the commander of Deir ez-Zor Military Council, Ahmad al-Khabil, aka Abu Khawla, from duty after committing crimes and violations, and misusing authority.

This coincided with a security operation against the Islamic State (ISIS).

The countryside of Deir ez-Zor is witnessing security tension following the SDF’s decision to dismiss Abu Khawla, who is accused of drug trafficking, communication with external parties, and facing criminal charges.
