FMs of Syria, Iran discuss bilateral issues in Damascus
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Foreign Minister of Syria Faisal Mekdad met on Wednesday with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian to discuss bilateral issues and important agreements between the two countries.
This came after the Iranian Foreign Minister arrived at Damascus International Airport in an official visit.
During a joint press conference, Mekdad stated, “We had extensive discussions on many issues, including the bilateral relations that are always moving in a positive direction and the follow-up on the implementation of agreements signed during the visit of the Iranian President to Damascus.”
He added that they discussed the challenges facing Syria and Iran, including the continued hostile policies by the US and the West.
Mekdad further mentioned that they deeply discussed the most recent international developments, including the expansion of the BRICS group, which reinforces multipolarity as the only solution to the world’s problems.
For his part, Amirabdollahian strongly condemned the Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, including the recent one on Aleppo International Airport, emphasizing that such attacks will not go unanswered.
He clarified that the lengthy discussions held with the Syrian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were constructive regarding bilateral relations, agreements, and international issues of mutual interest.
Amirabdollahian added that they agreed to hold meetings of the Iran-Syria Joint Committee, headed by the Iranian Vice President and the Syrian Prime Minister, in Tehran soon.
They also discussed the continuation of the fight against the presence of illegal US forces on Syrian soil under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
Amirabdollahian concluded the conference by stating that establishing relations between Syria and Turkey based on good neighborliness and respect for Syria’s sovereignty creates a positive atmosphere in the region. He also mentioned that the quadrilateral meetings between Syria, Russia, Iran, and Turkey have proposed positive ideas regarding respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Foreign ministers of Syria, Turkey, Russia, and Iran met on May 10 in Moscow over efforts to end decades of tension between Syria and Turkey; during the meeting Russia proposed a roadmap for restoring Syrian-Turkish relations to normal.
Late in December 2022, a trilateral meeting took place between the defense ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia in Moscow, marking the first high-level meeting between Syria and Turkey since the onset of the Syrian war.
