Unknown gunmen kill member of Central Committee in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Unknown armed individuals killed on Wednesday a member of the Central Committee representing the population and negotiation with the Syrian government in the western countryside of Daraa  Governorate, southern Syria.

A local source told North Press that “Amjad al-Ghazawi was killed after being targeted by armed individuals riding a motorcycle in the city of Tafas in the western countryside of Daraa.”

The source added that al-Ghazawi was one of the members of the Central Committee formed to negotiate with the government forces in 2018 and had previously worked with opposition factions before the government forces entered Daraa.

Al-Ghazawi was among those who rejected the settlement and headed to northern Syria in 2018, but he returned shortly after and was arrested by the government forces. However, he was released after a short period of detention.

In July 2018, opposition factions and the government forces reached an agreement, mediated by Russia, regarding the opposition-held areas of Daraa.

According to the deal, opposition militants who agreed to hand over heavy weapons, were handed special cards to protect them from prosecution, and allowed them to stay in Daraa. Those opposed to the agreement were forced to leave for Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).

The source pointed out that al-Ghazawi’s release came through the mediation of the Central Committee in the western countryside of Daraa at that time, and he later became one of its members.

Assassination operations in Daraa have targeted several members of the Central Committee in the western countryside of Daraa, including Ahmad Baqqirat in the town of Tel Shihab and Musab Bradan in the city of Tafas.
