NGO cleans Jaghjagh river surroundings in Syria’s Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – PEL, a local organization in northeastern Syria, launched on Wednesday a campaign to clean up the surroundings of Jaghjagh river which became an epicenter for waste, in the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria.

The campaign, which will last for three days, started from Newroz Bridge area in the city center, with the participation of more than 35 volunteers of the organization and workers of the municipality.

“Their initiative is environmental within the activities of the organization, and will include the Jaghjagh river, the garage area and bridges area”, Fadel al-Kaud, facilitator in PEL Organization, said.

“Their campaign targets the river mainly after it turned into a dumpster that causes health problems”, he pointed out.

Turkey’s containment of water flowing into the river also contributed to this, according to al-Kaud.

Starting from February 2020, Turkey has been restricting the amount of water flowing from the Euphrates River into Syria, despite global and regional warnings of a potential health and agricultural crisis.

On the last day of the campaign, its organizers distribute 50 garbage containers in the targeted place and some parks.

The municipality will also supply soil in order to cover the river banks, aiming to enhance cleanliness and improve the river’s aesthetic appeal.
