US representative calls for implementation of “Anti-Assad Act”
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A prominent US representative demanded on Friday that Congress pass “Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act” following the protests that have erupted in southern Syria for a week.
Joe Wilson, US Representative, said the anti-government protests “have inspired the world.”
For a week, anti-government protests have started in Daraa and Suwayda governorate demanding the improvement of the economic conditions. Later, they have expanded as the protesters are demanding “the overthrow of the regime”, the implementation of the UNSC Resolution 2254 and the establishment of a decentralized system, and the retreat from the unjust decisions like the increase of the prices of fuel. However, the Syrian government is still taking no action.
“The multi-ethic and cross-sectarian protests across Syria against brutal Assad this week have inspired the world and demonstrate that Syria has no future and will never stabilize under Assad,” Wilson tweeted.
He demanded that the Congress pass an act to prohibit any official action to recognize or normalize relations with the Syrian government led by president Bashar al-Assad.
In May, a number of US representatives and congressmen introduced an act titled “Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act of 2023” to hold the Syrian government led by its president Bashar al-Assad, and its backers, accountable for their “crimes against the Syrian people and deter normalization with the Assad regime.”
“I am looking forward to Congress soon passing our bipartisan Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act and am grateful to stand for a #FreeSyria,” Wilson added.
He resembled the Syrian people with the Ukrainians in terms of suffering from ongoing war, “Like Ukrainians, the people of Syria have suffered absolute depravity at the hands of mass murderers Putin & Assad.”
“Those who seek to normalize and reach agreements with Assad are doing business with death itself,” Joe Wilson stressed.
