Druze leader rejects government’s request in Syria’s Suwayda
Suwayda, Syria (North Press) – Leader of the Druze al-Muwahhidun Sheikh al-Aql, Kikmat al-Hajiri in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, refused the request of the governor of Suwayda to pacify protesters, sources said on Thursday.
An exclusive source from the town of al-Qanawat in the northern countryside of Suwayda told North Press that the governor of Suwayda, Bassam Barsik, visited al-Hajiri on Wednesday with a message and solutions presented from the Syrian government to pacify the people in Suwayda.
“The sheikh Hikmat refused all those solutions,” the source said.
The sheikh stressed and supported the rightful demands of the people of Suwayda. He also added that the demands are clear and need no explanation, according to the source.
“Religious leaders are also participating in the protests same as all the segments of the society,” he noted.
Since Aug. 17, anti-government protests began in Daraa and Suwayda. Organizers of the protests stressed to North Press that they would continue to protest until their demands are achieved.
