UN Special Envoy for Syria, Egypt’s FM discuss Syrian file

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen conducted on Sunday a phone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Sameh Shoukry to discuss the latest developments on the Syrian file, after the meeting of the Arab Ministerial Contact Group on Syria.

On August 16, a meeting of the Arab Ministerial Contact Group on Syria was held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria in addition to Arab League Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that “Shoukry discussed with Pedersen the outcomes of the Arab Contact Group meeting on Syria. He affirmed the committee’s commitment to completing its mission in order to reach a comprehensive settlement for the Syrian crisis and maintain Syria’s unity and stability.”

Shoukry and Pedersen exchanged views on the latest developments regarding the situation in Syria on various levels, as well as the efforts being made to resolve the Syrian crisis, the spokesperson added.

It has been clarified that a bilateral meeting between Pedersen and Shoukry has been arranged to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in September.

The spokesperson also mentioned that Pedersen praised the outcomes of the Arab Contact Group meeting, affirming his determination to coordinate with various stakeholders in order to build upon the achievements made in the recent committee meeting.
