Public strike, protest persist in Syria’s Suwayda

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria witnessed on Sunday a public strike rejecting the political reality on the ground and the deteriorating economic conditions.

Local activists told North Press that early in the morning, protestors blocked the Damascus-Suwayda highway and most roads leading to the city to stop the traffic, allowing only humanitarian cases and university students to pass.

After closing roads, Syrian government facilities were completely shut down inside the city and its countryside, according to the activists.

The purpose of the strike was to confirm that the government is incapable of providing services to the people or enhancing economic conditions, they noted.

The best way to deal with massive corruption inside government facilities is to shut them down and strike, they added.

The protests concentrated in the al-Karama square inside the city, where they blocked roads and set fire to tires.

The protestors chanted slogans demanding to “oust the regime,” and reiterated the necessity of implementing UN Resolution 2254 to achieve political reforms.

The activists said the protests are ongoing and the public strike would not stop until the public’s demands are achieved.

The protests in Suwayda began following resolutions made by the Syrian government to raise fuel prices amid deteriorating living conditions of the population.
