Turkish electric company official arrested following protests in Aleppo
AL-BAB, Syria (North Press) – Civil Police, a faction affiliated with the Turkish-backed armed opposition, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), arrested on Saturday the deputy director of the Turkish power electric company following public protests against high prices in the city of al-Bab in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, north Syria.
The city of al-Bab has been under the occupation of Turkey and its SNA factions since 2017.
An exclusive source told North Press that the Civil Police detained the deputy director of the AK Energy electricity company after issuing an arrest warrant for the administration of the company due to not abiding by the contracts signed with the Local Council.
The electric power company had recently raised prices for household, commercial and industrial uses in the region by one third. This decision was followed by wide protests on Saturday against the company in cities and towns under the SNA control in the countryside of Aleppo, where they closed the company and set fires in front of its building, according to the source.
It is worth noting that in 2018, the Local Council in al-Bab granted the AK Energy the exclusive right to manage electricity distribution in the region. This involved the extension of high-voltage cables via the Bab al-Salama border crossing in the north of Azaz.
