ISIS attack in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor kills, injures 30 soldiers

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday night, 20 soldiers of the Syrian government forces were killed and 10 others were wounded in an attack launched by the Islamic State group (ISIS) in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria.

Media affiliated with the Syrian government reported that a bus transferring soldiers was ambushed in the countryside of the town of al-Mayadin in Deir ez-Zor desert.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense said on Friday, a terrorist group attacked a military bus in the southeast of Deir ez-Zor, killing and wounding a number of military personnel.

The Syrian Desert covers nearly half of the area of Syria, and is distributed over the governorates of Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Rif Dimashq, Suwayda and Palmyra.

Iranian-backed militias and the government forces control large areas of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which constitutes a source of concern as it witnesses intensive operations by the ISIS sleeper cells.
