Person killed, another injured in two attacks in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – One person was killed and another was injured, on Wednesday, while two others survived by two targets carried out by unknown gunmen riding motorcycles, in the town of al-Basira in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

Rashid al-Salama, a resident of al-Basira, said that unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle targeted with Kalashnikov bullets the young man Mohammed al-Sarheed, 34, and another person of his relatives, near their house in al-Basira.

Al-Salama told North Press that the targeting resulted in the killing of al-Sarheed and the injury of his relative, who was transferred to a field hospital in the town.

Al-Sarheed is a civilian and does not belong to any political or military party, and he has no issues of revenge or tribal disputes, but his father was killed two months ago by unknown gunmen, after which Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for killing the father on the pretext of dealing with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

In another incident, the same source said that Mohammed al-Atwan and another person who was with him survived an assassination attempt, where unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle attacked them, near al-Yasat neighborhood on the outskirts of al-Basira.

Al-Atwan and the person with him managed to get away from the gunmen and hide in one of the nearby houses, He added.

The Syrian Desert covers nearly half of the area of Syria and is distributed over the governorates of Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Rif Dimashq, Suwayda, and Palmyra.

The Iranian-backed militias and Syrian government forces control large areas of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which constitutes a source of concern as it witnesses intensive operations by the ISIS sleeper cells.
