3 civilians killed following Turkish shelling over Syria’s Raqqa

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Three civilians, including a woman, were killed and three others were injured on Tuesday following Turkish shelling over Raqqa Governorate in northern Syria.

The Turkish shelling targeted the house of Haya al-Saleem, a 25-year-old woman from the village of Sherka in the countryside of the town of Ain Issa, north of Raqqa, injuring her and killing her son, her stepson, and her mother-in-law.

“Four shells targeted the road next to my house and the fifth one targeted the kitchen,” she told North Press. “The injuries were caused by the fragments of the shells.”

According to Haya, the casualties are: Haya al-Khamees, 9, Abdullah al-Khamees, 2.5 years, Jouza al-Sameet, 60. In addition to Haya, her daughters in law, Amani al-Khamees, 4, and Malak, 12 were all injured due to the fragments.

“My mother-in-law was be-headed due to the shelling fragments, and my son died in the hospital instantly, my daughter-in-law died after a while in the hospital,” she said.

Haya now is in a stable situation in Modern Medicine Hospital in Raqqa after she underwent a surgery to her leg, according to a medical official in the hospital who preferred not to be named.

The town of Ain Issa has been under constant shelling by the Turkish forces and their affiliated armed factions since Oct. 2019, when they launched the so-called “Peace Spring” military operation on the city of Sere Kaniya (Ras al-Ain) in the north of Hasakah, and Tel Abyad in the north of Raqqa to push away the Syrian Democratic Forces(SDF) under the pretext to protect the Turkish national security.
