Gunman killed in attack against government forces in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – An unidentified assailant was killed on Wednesday at dawn after he attacked a military post of the Syrian government forces in the town of Abu Kamal in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

A military source within the government forces said that unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle targeted with machine guns the post of the Military Security forces at the entrance of Abu Kamal.

Following the attack, a clash between the two parties erupted, killing one of the attackers, a man in his thirties, whereas the other managed to flee, the source told North Press.

The Military Security forces were on high alert and maximum security status because the post was targeted in a similar attack two days earlier, killing a guard and injuring another, he noted.

The town’s people did not identify the attacker who was killed in the clash as he did not carry any identification papers, according to the source.

The Iranian-backed militias and the government forces control large areas of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which constitutes a source of concern as it witnesses intensive operations by ISIS sleeper cells.
