G7 provides long-term security assurances for Ukraine

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – In a statement after the NATO summit on Wednesday, the Group of Seven reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine by announcing a set of long-term security guarantees to help it deter Russia’s invasion.

This statement came in a joint press conference of the G7 leaders with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after finishing the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The G7 stated that it will work with Ukraine on specific, long-term security commitments to ensure the “enduring support to Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The G7 also said that in case of any future armed attack by Russia, they intend to provide quick and sustained security assistance to Ukraine, as well as advanced military equipment.

US president Joe Biden said, “We’re going to help Ukraine build a strong capable defense across land, air and sea . . . and which will be a force of stability in the region and deter against any and all threats.”

Zelensky, in turn, thanked the G7 leaders for the support days after lashing out at NATO for not inviting Ukraine into the block.

“We understand that the best guarantee for Ukraine is to be in NATO. On our way to NATO, we would like the security guarantees and to have them permanently, so that they would make our relationship with [western] countries even more powerful,” Zelensky told reporters.
