HTS arrests 37 people in camp in NW Syria

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – As of Tuesday night, a total of 37 individuals have been detained by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) in Kilali camp in northern Idlib, northwest Syria, on allegations of inciting protests against the group.

An exclusive source told North Press that the arrests began on Tuesday, July 11, at night when the HTS’ security apparatus raided the Kilali camp.

They arrested 12 women and 25 men, including the elderly, under charges of incitement and participating in anti-HTS protests.

The detainees were taken to the 107 prison in Idlib for investigation amid growing tension and calls for protesting against the arrests in the camp, he added.

HTS has intensified the arrest campaigns in camps in northern Idlib, such as the Kilali, Deir Hassan, Atme, and Harbanush, in addition to the towns of Ariha and Jisr al-Shughur, west of Idlib.

On Tuesday, HTS raided the Kilali camp and arrested 29 individuals, including 10 women, under charges of incitement against the group.

On Tuesday, a group of women organized an anti-HTS protest in the village of al-Sahara in the western countryside of Aleppo to condemn the group’s recent policies and to demand the release of their relatives detained in the group’s prisons.

The HTS, founded in 2017, controls Idlib and the western countryside of Aleppo, using the Salvation Government as a political and administrative umbrella since.
