Detainee by SNA found dead with torture marks in Syria’s Tel Abyad

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The people of the village of al-Buz, south of the city of Tel Abyad, northern Syria, found on Monday a body of a young man with torture marks. He was detained by Turkish-backed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA).

An eyewitness from the village told North Press that the body belonged to Mahyar al-Aweid, from the countryside of Hama, west central Syria. He was identified through identification papers that were in his pocket.

A military source from the region said al-Aweid was arrested eight months ago when he came from Raqqa in an attempt to enter SNA-held areas to immigrate from there to Europe.

Civil Police, affiliated with the SNA, recorded the perpetrator as unknown in the register, then transferred the body to Tel Abyad Hospital to be buried later since he had no relatives present in the region, according to the source.

On October 9, 2019, Turkey launched an invasion against the cities of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad. It resulted in the Turkish occupation of the region and in the displacement of over 300.000 of the region’s inhabitants.

North Press reached out to official authorities in the region, but they did not comment on the incident.
