Three civilians injured in government shelling of NW Syria

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday evening, three people were injured in a ground and air bombardment by Syrian government forces on residential neighborhoods in the city of Jisr al-Shughur in the west of Idlib, northwestern Syria.

Local sources from the area told North Press that the government forces, stationed in Ghab Plain area, west of Hama, targeted residential neighborhoods in the city of Jisr al-Shughur with artillery shells and missiles.

The sources added that three civilians were injured in the shelling, including a man and his daughter, in addition to the partial destruction of many buildings in the city as a result of their direct targeting.

On Sunday, three children were wounded in a ground and air bombardment by Syrian government forces on Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib.

On June 25, Russian strikes targeted farms near the city and vegetable markets in Jisr al-Shughur, killing and wounding more than 75 people.

Recently, northwest Syria witnessed an escalation of military operations and intense mutual shelling, with Russian warplanes participating in dozens of airstrikes that killed and injured dozens of people.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment between Syrian government forces and opposition factions accompanied by Russian warplanes’ flight despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.

In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.
