Iraq discusses economic cooperation with Syria
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Head of the Iraqi government, Muhammed Shayya’ al-Sudani, met with the Syrian ambassador to Iraq, Sattam Jadaan al-Dandah, on Sunday to discuss “common issues” between the two countries, especially in the economic sector.
The meeting occurred in Baghdad, where they discussed issues of common interest to both Iraq and Syria.
The two countries share a 600 km long border and several land outlets. It is worth mentioning that Iraq is one of the most prominent countries to maintain its diplomatic tie with Syria since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011. It urged Arab states, in more than one occasion, to normalize ties with Syria.
Both parties discussed bilateral relations between the two countries during the meeting. A statement released by al-Sudani’s office said that they stressed the importance of having productive and constructive bilateral cooperation in various economic sectors.
The statement added that Syria and Iraq look forward to strengthening interlink ages that bring the two countries together.
On May 7, Arab foreign ministers of the Arab League agreed on Syria’s official return to its seat in the Arab League after more than 10 years of suspension.
Some countries have stepped up to normalize ties with Syria, something Turkey is already doing, while others, most notably the United States and the UK, oppose the rapprochement unless Syria takes steps towards a political solution.
