{"id":99609,"date":"2023-06-15T09:59:29","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T09:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=99609"},"modified":"2023-06-15T09:59:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T09:59:31","slug":"erdogan-says-turkey-not-to-support-swedens-bid-to-join-nato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/99609\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Erdogan says Turkey not to support Sweden\u2019s bid to join NATO<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Sweden has not won Turkey\u2019s support to join NATO ahead of the military alliance\u2019s summit in Vilnius next month, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSweden\u2019s expectations do not mean we will follow them,\u201d Erdogan said during a trip to Azerbaijan, according to Bloomberg and Turkish media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland and Sweden formally applied to join NATO in May 2022 prompted by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February but were met with huge rejection from Turkey and Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey had rejected the two Nordic countries\u2019 bid for NATO membership under the pretext that they support the PKK, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the People\u2019s Protection Units (YPG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in March, Turkey hindered Sweden from joining NATO but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/94968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ratified Finland\u2019s bid<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, senior officials from Turkey, Sweden and Finland met in Ankara to discuss Turkey\u2019s concerns over Sweden\u2019s NATO bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials had been privately expressing optimism going into the meeting, however there was more caution by the day\u2019s end, as the meeting broke out without a clear signal of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey has been dragging its feet on approving Sweden\u2019s bid, citing concerns about Stockholm\u2019s support for Kurdish groups, including the Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSweden must first of all eradicate what this terrorist organization is doing,\u201d the Turkish president said in his remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Emma Jamal<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Sweden has not won Turkey\u2019s support to join NATO ahead of the military alliance\u2019s summit in Vilnius next month, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday. \u201cSweden\u2019s expectations do not mean we will follow them,\u201d Erdogan said during a trip to Azerbaijan, according to Bloomberg and Turkish media.
