{"id":98379,"date":"2023-05-23T11:34:27","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T11:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=98379"},"modified":"2023-05-23T11:34:29","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T11:34:29","slug":"french-fm-says-al-assad-should-be-prosecuted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/98379\/","title":{"rendered":"French FM says al-Assad should be prosecuted"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>In a televised interview on May 23, France&#8217;s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should be prosecuted for chemical weapon attacks and the killing of hundreds of thousands of Syrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remarks were made less than a week after al-Assad was welcomed back into the Arab League, a regional diplomatic body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have to remember who Bashar al-Assad is. He&#8217;s a leader who has been the enemy of his own people for over 10 years,&#8221; the French government official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;So long as he doesn&#8217;t change, so long as he doesn&#8217;t commit to reconciliation, to the fight against terrorism, the fight against drugs &#8230; so long as he doesn&#8217;t fulfill his commitments, there&#8217;s no reason to change our attitude towards him,&#8221; Colonna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French ambassador to the United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/97135\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had warned against normalizing relations<\/a> with Damascus in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake on February 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European Union (EU) sanctions against Syrian government officials would remain in effect, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EU previously said Arab states should not accept an unconditional rapprochement with al-Assad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think it&#8217;s up to him to change, it&#8217;s not up to France to change our attitude,&#8221; the French Foreign Minister added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Sasha Hoffman<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 In a televised interview on May 23, France&#8217;s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should be prosecuted for chemical weapon attacks and the killing of hundreds of thousands of Syrians.
