{"id":98214,"date":"2023-05-20T06:48:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-20T06:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=98214"},"modified":"2023-05-20T06:48:01","modified_gmt":"2023-05-20T06:48:01","slug":"erdogan-says-turkey-to-not-approve-swedens-bid-to-join-nato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/98214\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Erdogan says Turkey to not approve Sweden\u2019s bid to join NATO<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that his country is not ready to approve Sweden\u2019s bid to join NATO, as long as the latter continues to harbor members of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erdogan, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/19\/middleeast\/turkey-president-recep-tayyip-erdogan-interview-mime-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an interview with the CNN<\/a>, tackled a key flashpoint in Turkish tensions with the West which is Sweden\u2019s accession to NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland and Sweden formally applied to join NATO in May 2022 prompted by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February but were met with huge rejection from Turkey and Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey had rejected the two Nordic countries\u2019 bid for NATO membership under the pretext that they support the PKK, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the People\u2019s Protection Units (YPG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in March, Turkey hindered Sweden from joining NATO but <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/94968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ratified Finland\u2019s bid<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs long as Sweden continues to allow the offshoots of terror groups in Turkey to roam free in Sweden \u2026 we cannot look favorably on Sweden\u2019s membership in NATO,\u201d the Turkish President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that his country is \u201cnot ready for Sweden right now\u201d because it should show up a firm stance towards \u201cterrorism\u201d first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Emma Jamal<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that his country is not ready to approve Sweden\u2019s bid to join NATO, as long as the latter continues to harbor members of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
