{"id":97273,"date":"2023-05-01T15:05:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T15:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=97273"},"modified":"2023-05-01T15:05:30","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T15:05:30","slug":"government-siege-cuts-off-power-to-kurdish-majority-neighborhoods-in-aleppo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/97273\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Government siege cuts off power to Kurdish-majority neighborhoods in Aleppo<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) &#8211; Since<\/strong> yesterday, Sunday, power generators in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh in the Aleppo Governorate, northwest Syria, have stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian government, since late last year, has been besieging the two neighborhoods and other areas under the AANES in the northern countryside of Aleppo, where IDPs of Afrin have been residing since 2018 when Turkey occupied Afrin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A local source from Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood told North Press that the generators have stopped due to the diesel unavailability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source, which preferred to be unnamed, said that in the past two days the generators worked for only two hours, and this indicates that the residents of the two neighborhoods, who are besieged by the government forces, will experience durable sufferings, especially after the disaster of the Feb. 6 earthquake that caused many buildings to collapse and many residents to lose life or become homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source added, &#8220;Every three months, we experience a siege, banning basics from reaching the two neighborhoods, adding to that the difficulties and harassment the residents witness at the government checkpoints.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Kurdish-majority Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods are semi-autonomous and run by a civil administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two neighborhoods, in addition to the IDPs camps and villages in the northern countryside of Aleppo are housing the IDPs of Afrin who fled the violations and the invasion of the Turkish army and the Turkish-backed armed opposition factions since their control of Afrin in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh have become a safe haven for many people from both inside and outside the city of Aleppo. This has led to the activation of trade and industrial movement, but the Syrian government besieges them frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, both Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh enjoy security and stability better than that of the other neighborhoods in Aleppo, which made them to be a target of the armed opposition factions several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neighborhoods are separated from the other neighborhoods in Aleppo by three government security checkpoints; Ashrafiyeh, Awared, and Maghsalat al-Jazira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ongoing siege imposed by the Syrian government on the northern countryside of Aleppo threatens with a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/97070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major humanitarian disaster<\/a>,\u201d an official in Local Administration and Environment Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) said on April 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jamie Parks, researcher at the Rojava Information Centre (RIC), told The New Arab, &#8220;The ongoing siege of the AANES-aligned neighbourhoods&#8230;has led to an almost untenable situation for the people there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Temporary embargoes, regularly imposed by the Syrian army, restrict the entry of basic necessities such as flour for bakeries, baby food, fuel, and medicines to the isolated pocket of mainly Kurdish residents,&#8221; Parks said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Rafi Hassan<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) &#8211; Since yesterday, Sunday, power generators in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh in the Aleppo Governorate, northwest Syria, have stopped.
