{"id":96646,"date":"2023-04-18T09:11:58","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T09:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=96646"},"modified":"2023-04-18T09:12:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T09:12:00","slug":"biden-administration-approves-f-16-upgrade-to-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/96646\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Biden administration approves F-16 upgrade to Turkey<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>In a deal valued at $259 million, US President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration notified Congress on Monday of the sale of defense articles and services to support modernization of Turkey&#8217;s fleet of F-16s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After leaders of US congressional committees gave informal approval, Turkey had requested to buy equipment and services to support the current fleet of F-16 fighter jets, while Turkey&#8217;s request to buy of F-16s remains in limbo amid continuing opposition in Congress, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, the Biden administration informally notified the Congress of its intention to sell 40 new F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, along with 80 upgrade kits to modernize the Turkish Air Force\u2019s existing F-16 fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Turkey is a\u202flongstanding\u202fand valued NATO ally,&#8221; the State Department spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Biden Administration supports Turkey\u2019s efforts to bring the avionics of its F-16 fleet up to standard,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The requested Turkish upgrade will improve the interoperability between Turkish and NATO systems, spokesperson noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-16 upgrade deal follows Turkey approving Finland&#8217;s accession to the NATO military alliance and signs of easing tensions between Turkey and neighbor Greece ahead of Turkish elections next month, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, 29 senators informed US President Joe Biden in a letter that the <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/91931\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congress will not support the F-16 sale<\/a> if Turkey does not stop blocking Sweden and Finland\u2019s entry into NATO.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Shella Abdulhalim<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 In a deal valued at $259 million, US President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration notified Congress on Monday of the sale of defense articles and services to support modernization of Turkey&#8217;s fleet of F-16s.
