The journalist was detained by the Federal Security Bureau, the successor to the Soviet secret police, the KGB. He has been accused of spying for the United States government and faces a possible 20-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Journal and the Biden administration have denied the accusations and have called for his immediate release. There is little hope for swift proceedings, the Journal reports, as espionage trials in Russia are conducted in secret and almost always result in a conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the first time the Russian government has brought an espionage charge against an overseas reporter since the Cold War. However, Russia has recently detained other US citizens. Days before the invasion of Ukraine, it arrested American basketball player Brittney Griner on drug charges. She was released in December in exchange for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms trafficker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has had a dismal freedom of press record under Vladimir Putin. <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/country\/russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reporters without Borders<\/a> (RSF) ranked the country 150<sup>th<\/sup> out of 180 globally in 2021. Since the invasion of Ukraine, it has fallen further, to 155<sup>th<\/sup>.
