appoints new leader"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Human Rights Watch (HRW) named on Monday Tirana Hassan, a lawyer and veteran human rights investigator, the next executive director of the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HRW said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2023\/03\/27\/tirana-hassan-lead-human-rights-watch\">in a statement<\/a>, that Hassan was previously the organization chief programs officer and had been serving as acting executive director since September 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hassan was born in Singapore to a Pakistani father whose family left India during partition and a Malaysian-born Sri Lankan and Chinese mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her family resettled in Australia in the 1970s after her father\u2019s academic research on Singapore\u2019s housing policies triggered the ire of the government, which was cracking down on dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Emma
