{"id":94744,"date":"2023-03-15T11:11:10","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T11:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=94744"},"modified":"2023-03-15T11:11:12","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T11:11:12","slug":"sna-resumes-illegal-dismantling-of-syrias-afrin-railroads-stj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/94744\/","title":{"rendered":"SNA resumes illegal dismantling of Syria&#8217;s Afrin railroads &#8211; STJ"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>According to Syrians for Truth and Justice (STJ), a local watchdog, Turkish-backed Syrian opposition factions of the Syrian National Army (SNA) in Afrin, northwest Syria, are heavily involved in the illegal dismantling and theft of the region&#8217;s Ottoman-era railway network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report mentions several SNA factions, including Hamza Division, Sultan Suleiman Shah Division, Sultan Murad Division, and Ahrar al-Sharqiya, as participants in the dismantling and trade of the railroad, particularly in Afrin&#8217;s north-western Rajo district. In one instance, the Military Police, an outfit established by Turkey, was involved in the theft of railroad steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/122176\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exclusive photos provided by North Press<\/a> and other local news sites, as well as statements from SNA sources, STJ reconstructs the SNA&#8217;s illegal trade. According to the report, the Turkish governor of Hatay, who has overseen the Afrin region since 2018, as well Turkish intelligence officials, forbid the theft of the railroads shortly after the invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both highlighted the &#8220;importance of the railway as an Ottoman symbol and a future project in the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2018, Turkish forces, supported by SNA factions, invaded and occupied the Afrin region, which until then had been majority-Kurdish. Around 300.000 original inhabitants were displaced. Turkey has since then established settlements for Arab Syrians in Afrin in what some observers have called a policy of &#8220;ethnic engineering.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theft and sale of railroad steel resumed in 2022, likely due to changes in Turkish intelligence staff in the region, as well as Ankara&#8217;s priorities. STJ recorded the dismantling of over 22 kilometers of railroad last year and in the first three months of 2023, including from the Hasharge bridge in Rajo district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to STJ, the mental scraps are used by SNA factions on the frontlines with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and government forces, or sold in the cities of Idlib, al-Bab and Hama, where they can be used in the construction of hangers and chicken farms.
